    EXOTAC fireSLEEVE™, nanoSTRIKER XL™ and candleTIN™ Review

EXOTAC fireSLEEVE™, nanoSTRIKER XL™ and candleTIN™ Review

I’ve been interested in Exotac’s products for quite some time now after I’d seen some great reviews of their products. In case you don’t already know, Exotac ( is a privately held, family owned small business based out of Buford, Georgia in the good old USA. On their website they state their vision “is based upon designing extraordinary, high-quality and unique outdoor and urban gear.  We spare no expense and make absolutely no compromises when it comes to product design and manufacturing quality.  Our products are not mass-manufactured by the lowest bidder.   We manufacture each product in smaller quantity runs which allow us to make improvements along the way.”

All their products are proudly made in the United States of America.

I got in touch with Jeremy from Exotac and he kindly sent out a some samples of their best-selling products: the fireSleeve, nanoStriker XL and candleTIN Review.

You can view the rest of their product lineup at:

We all know how important fire is in a survival situation and how it is crucial that fire starting implements are kept safe and dry. This is often very difficult especially when out in the boonies where you face the elements head on. The fireSleeve is basically a protective case for a BIC Classic Maxi lighter and will keep it safe and dry.

It’s made from rubber, it’s waterproof even when submerged to 3 feet for 30 minutes plus it floats so even if it’s dropped in water you’re not going to lose your Bic lighter. You can get it in a few different colours: Orange, Black, Green and a limited glow-in-the-dark version which will cost you an extra $4 USD.

Cost is $14.95 USD

This is Exotac’s flagship product and the big brother […]

True Utility FireStash Review – Fantastic Keychain EDC Fire Starter

True Utility FireStash Review – Fantastic Keychain EDC Fire Starter

We’ve just received some products from True Utility for testing, evaluation and review. A huge thanks to them for sending them out to us. True Utility® describe themselves as a British design company that specialises in stainless steel gifts, gadgets, and key-ring accessories. Creating clever things for key-rings, True Utility provides people with minimalist and practical solutions to everyday problems.  You can find out more about them at

In a survival situation one of the first priorities of survival is the ability to keep yourself warm. Fire as we all know provides just that and a whole lot more. One easy way to carry fire making capability around with you is to carry a small butane lighter in your pocket, purse, bag or on your keychain.

True Utility has produced a convenient EDC-friendly firestarter called the FireStash which is a small waterproof key ring canister housing a mini butane lighter. Once the fluid in the FireStash runs out, you don’t have to worry about throwing it away. It can be conveniently refilled with standard lighter fluid available from most supermarkets and newsagents.

The exterior is made from dark chrome plated zinc alloy. There is also a waterproof neoprene O ring around where the cap screws on to the canister to keep the lighter dry – something that is very important especially with fire making implements. A wet lighter is of no use especially when you need it most.

The FireStash took me about 4 strikes to get a cotton pad burning as the striker is a little bit too small for my thumb so makes it a little awkward to roll – but what do you expect from a mini butane lighter. What is important is whether it lights every […]

The Firestarter by Aussie Survival Tools – Review

Aussie Survival Tools claims their firestarter is the best in the world – is it really? Today we will take a look at The Firestarter from Aussie Survival Tools and find out if it really is the best in the world. The Firestarter includes a Rosewood handle, 99.8% pure magnesium rod and a high quality ferrocerium rod.

The Rosewood handle of The Firestarter can be used to create wood shavings for emergency tinder when dry tinder is hard to find after wet weather. The great thing about Rosewood is that it is naturally oily, resists water and lights easily – burning for a long time. Aussie Survival Tools say that this is the only firestarter with a built in supply of tinder and we have not come across any other firestarter with this feature (except for the Bear Grylls firestarter which includes a watertight tinder storage compartment with cotton balls, but no built in supply of tinder), so Aussie Survival Tools does have a unique design. To use the handle to create tinder, simply use the included carbon steel striker to firmly shave the Rosewood into fine curls to form a small pile.

The magnesium used in The Firestarter is among the purest available at 99.8% pure magnesium. Magnesium lights easily and burns with a hot white flame. Magnesium can be used to light damp (but not wet) tinder, rubber tires for a black smoke signal, or just for easier fire lighting in any condition. To use the magnesium, use the included carbon steel striker to scrape magnesium shavings into a pile of tinder.

Ferrocerium is a man-made metallic material that gives off hot sparks at temperatures of 1,650 °C (3,000 °F) when scraped against a rough surface (pyrophoricity), […]
