Today, we’re going to be taking a look at the Life Straw Go which is next in line in our “Survival Filters 101” series.
LifeStraw’s range of products is manufactured by Vestergaard, a Swiss company which specialises in disease control products for developing countries.
LifeStraws are world renowned and are widely used in 3rd world countries and in emergency aid supplies.
The LifeStraw Go is one of 3 products in LifeStraws range of filters and features a water bottle with an integrated LifeStraw filter making it possible to drink directly from streams and lakes using the straw, or simply filling up the bottle and taking it with you. So, this is your go-anywhere water bottle!

So first we’ll take a look at the bottle. Its a pretty standard looking sports type water bottle, its blue in colour with the LifeStraw branding down the side of it – nothing special about it really. Its made from BPA free Tritan (a sturdy type of plastic) and can hold 22 oz (0.65 L). So it can hold a reasonable amount of water. It is 9.25″ (235 mm) long and 3.14” (80 mm) in diameter making it both portable and compact. With an open-style high flow bite valve, drinking from the LifeStraw Go is as easy as sucking through a large straw. This makes it super easy for a young child to safely use it. The integrated silicone o-ring ensures a 100% leak proof cap so you’re not going to lose your precious water when on the move.

There’s a pretty flimsy aluminium carabineer attached to the bottle’s cap for quick attachment to a backpack, fanny pack or a belt. You could possibly replace this with a much more sturdier carabineer or 550 paracord if you wanted to.
Now, onto the filter. The filter component is held into the lid using friction and can be easily removed for cleaning or replacement. The Go meets US EPA requirements and is capable of filtering up to 264 gallons (1,000 L) of water to 0.2 microns which is quite exceptional. It removes 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria, including E. coli and salmonella. It also removes 99.9% of waterborne protozoa, including Giardia and Cryptosporidium.
The filter utilises advanced hollow fiber technology which basically uses a cluster of micro-fibrous tubes. Water is drawn through the side walls of those tubes into their hollow centres and out the end of the tubes leaving behind the harmful bacteria/protozoa which is trapped on the outer walls of the tubes. After each use you should flush the filter. To do this, simply take the lid off and blow through the spout – so none of this having to buy expensive cartridges for replacement, ever! This technology is a lot more effective than using chemicals which may be just as harmful as the polluted water you’re filtering!
With a RRP of $35, this filter is incredibly cheap and whats more, you’re paying for something that can potentially save your life when things go south. So, we give this product 4.5 out of 5 stars for its quality design, its more than adequate capabilities and its portability. Half a star was taken off due to the fact that it only filters down to 0.2 microns, so it is obviously not the best filter out there on the market but is certainly more than capable of what it does.
We were highly impressed with the innovative and versatile design of this filter and recommend it for such activities as hiking, emergency preparedness, camping and other outdoor activities.
Another great thing about LifeStraw is the fact that with every purchase of a LifeStraw product, one school child in a developing country (e.g. Africa, Asia etc) is provided with clean, safe drinking water for an entire school year. Your purchase will make a difference and change lives… so get yours now!
