Secondary Logo orangeI’ve just got in a package of some nice folding knives from Gerber Gear. The first one we’ll be taking a look at is the Winchester 2.5” Brass Folding Knife made by Gerber Legendary Blades. Gerber has a contract with Winchester (best known for their small arms ammunition products) to manufacture several different knives for them among which is this neat little brass folder.

The Winchester 2.5″ Brass Folding Knife features a clip point blade, lock back mechanism and a surgical stainless steel blade. Measuring from tip to butt it is only 6 inches or 15 cm long. Weighing in at only .3 oz (8.5 g), this knife is so light weight that you even forget its in your pocket – at least that’s what I found!
On first look, it appeared to be a nice-looking, sturdy pocket knife that should serve you well for many years to come. Out of the blister-packaging, it was razor sharp and I proved that using the trusty old “shaving hair off arm” and paper slicing tests. I also turned the end of a stick into a nice spear point with it too.

Since a knife is really only as good as its blade, let’s start right here. The blade length is 2.5″ or 6.35 cm – not too big and not too small.
The description on the package says the blade is made from “surgical stainless steel”. You might be thinking “Now whatever is that?” Well, I did some research on what surgical stainless steel is and its actually equivalent to 440 – a mid range stainless steel. The blade is not as susceptible to rust as a carbon steel blade, but it is still advisable to always clean and oil it after an major usage or exposure to moisture.
For a small pocket knife, the blade is more than adequate for what it would be used for. It is not designed for heavy tasks such as batoning wood or something like that. If this knife was a fixed blade outdoor or survival knife then I would be more picky on the blade quality.
Next let’s have a look at the handle. It’s made from some nice genuine quality wood which appears to be something like oak (I might be mistaken) and on each end of the handle are these sleek looking, polished nickel brass bolsters giving this knife a very real vintage appearance. The bottom end of the handle has a small eyelet where you can put through some 550 paracord or a lanyard to secure the knife.

When you were younger, perhaps you would’ve seen your grandpa using a folding knife quite similar to this? Might bring back a few memories…

At the back of the package, I noticed a sticker which said “California Proposition 65 Warning” which got me quite concerned. The rest reads: “This product contains chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer, birth defect and/or reproductive harm”. Now, I’m assuming that this is referring to the nickel that is used in the brass fittings in the handle. Here is a link to some information on nickel:
Some suggestions or possible improvements.
No knife is or can ever be truly perfect. People have different likes and personal requirements for their knives. There is only one thing I wish this knife had for practical reasons – a substantial stainless steel pocket clip so that the knife can be securely clipped to a pocket, bag or a belt. Its no good to lose your trusty knife so in my opinion a pocket clip is a very essential component to any pocket knife. We decided that since this is a more classic looking folding knife, it might look a bit odd with a belt/pocket clip though.

At a RRP of only $23.00, the Winchester 2.5” Brass Folder is perfect for small everyday tasks such as cutting open boxes, rope, paracord, cutting an apple or just sitting quietly on a fallen tree trunk in the bush whittling away on a stick. It is also suitable for a youngster’s first pocket knife. In our opinion, every man should carry a pocket knife and should be taught from a reasonable age to do so. Why? Because its all about being prepared. Overall, I think Gerber has done a good job with this knife in terms of quality, craftmanship and design. I really like this knife and its now going to be one of my regular EDC pocket knives. Taking into account although the various factors that make a good knife, we rate the Winchester 2.5” Brass Folder at 4.5 out of 5 stars.
